Women’s Care Experiences: Doula’s Perception article is a study of qualitative research measuring doulas’ perception of their experiences in assisting women in prepartum, delivery, and postpartum. The affiliation of these authors includes nurses, a student working for their doctorate, and a professor. From the title, the target population being studied can be clearly identified. By the title, it is easy to determine which qualitative approach to conducting this research will be utilized. The abstract covers the research objective, the qualitative method, and the test. Research problem. Evidence exists why this study was of significance because through labor, birth and postpartum, the doulas is the mother’s advocate, providing support through non-medical techniques. The doula will also provide support to family members and friends present at that time. The researchers found the need to address doulas being more involved in pregnant women’s care. This topic was chosen because the author did not have a personal connection or motivation. Purpose and Research questions. The purpose of this study is to get a clear perception of the doulas in relationship to their experiences in helping women during prepartum, delivery and postpartum. This purpose directly approaches the problem of analysis. The aim and problem perfectly match in this study. Using the qualitative method for this study, the questions to b address will include how to interpret one’s job in prepartum, delivery and postpartum? In this case the doula will be in that position. A semi-structured interview was used to collect data including participant demographics. Research questions are known to be broad and open leading to unexpected outcomes and depending on the research process, they can change to a certain degree (Korstjens & Moser,2017), however the questions in this research were very specific. Literature Review. The literature review for this study was incomplete but quantitative and qualitative research was emphasized as very important in this research. This study used both current and older references in this study with the older references being used to show how the pregnant mothers handled intense labor in the presence of the doulas. Qualitative Approach. The qualitative research conducted in this study was descriptive in nature and the phenomenological research is what was used for this research. Phenomenological research always elaborates occurrences from a participant’s perspective or reflects on lived experiences (Gray, Grove and Sutherland (2017).  In this type of research, researchers must listen to the participants narrations of their experiences as well as watching for any nonverbal cues. This in turn helps the researcher understand the participants experience better. Sample and Sampling. Seven doulas from technique of data saturation were adopted into the study. The participants for this study were selected from the House of Support to the pregnant woman, which is affiliated with a public maternity. The criteria for inclusion were professionals that had more than one year of experience qualified for the study while those with no doula experience were excluded. Data Collection. Data was collected through a semi-structured interview. These interviews included the characterization of participants and keeping the main question in mind. These interviews were eventually transcribed using the Bardin technique. Protection of human study participants. The participants were never exposed to any kind of danger or threat during the study. Each participant signed a free informed consent that mentioned all the terms of the study and what to expect during this process. After data was collected through the semi-structured interviews, all information was handed over to the Research and Ethics committee, hence meeting the human being research requirements. Data management and analysis. There was no mention of the data being independently analyzed by the researchers. The research used the Bardin technique for management and analysis, however there was no audit trail noted. Findings. There were four categories identified after the analysis of data and these included work (service), pre-birth doula work, Doula work in childbirth and Doula work in the postpartum period. As the researchers describe the role a doula’s work as service, it is in that moment that the doula must step up and be the support that is expected of them both physically and emotionally to the laboring mother and her family. Discussion. The researchers had limitations when it came to addressing a specific doula group’s interpretation. However, there was new information provided on the pregnant woman’s experience through the eyes of the doula. As the researchers further mention, the doulas look at service as gratuity, distinguishing charity from the logic of humanization. Determinations of strengths and weaknesses of the qualitative studies Research report. The research report elements could be easily identified, and the overall presentation matched the purpose, method, and findings, making it a strength for the study. Research problem, purpose, and questions. The study aimed at a logical approach of resolving the research problem. The aim of this study perfectly matches the problem, and the question of this study is what leads to identifying the problem and main purpose of the study, hence a strength for the study. Literature review. There was no conducted review, which was one of the study’s weaknesses. Methods. The methods used for this study were all appropriate. They held consistency with the qualitative approach used. The effective ways of data collection made it easy for participants were also able to provide the required data used in conducting this research. A weakness that was noted was that no rational was given by the researchers for the methods used during the research. Although the management and analysis techniques applied and delivered results for the study, there was no chance for new observations to be made. It is also unknown whether the participants were ever given a chance to validate their information after it was transcribed. Findings. The findings are consistent with the qualitative approach and address the purpose of the study which is a merit of the study. The interpretations of data are congruent with data collected. The researchers addressed variation in findings by dividing the finding into four groups based on the answers provided by the participants. Discussion. In the discussion, the researchers acknowledged the study’s limitations, but never identified the implications. The limitations of the study could have been corrected at the end of the study. Evaluating the qualitative study Transparency. The researchers made their predictions about the sample population, methods of data collections and results abundantly clear. There were no ethical issues before, during or after the study. No bias was noted in this study. The participant characteristics were well described to make the findings more relevant to the study and the quotations from the participants were provided to support the findings. Truth. All the strategies the researchers used to confirm accuracy and logic collected data that was used to perform content analysis, and findings were compare to other previous studies. Time. It took the researchers a month to conduct interviews with the participants, although it is unknown how long these interviews had been going on for. The time spent collecting and analyzing data might have been adequate based on sample size, design complexity, and the phenomenon’s scope. Transformation. The findings reported facts and words that described experiences with depth and insight. The study lacked any other interpretations of the data. The meaning and interpretation of the data matched previous research findings. It also provided the meaning of the doula role.
